Project Reveal: Julian Street

Design, Project Reveal, The Process

A Historic Denver Foursquare Brought Thoughtfully Back to Life

Every historic home holds a story — and sometimes that story is interrupted.

Our Julian Street project began with a beautiful late 1800s Denver Foursquare whose original architectural soul had been lost over time through a series of unsympathetic renovations. Key walls had been removed, original trim and detailing had vanished, and the classic, balanced Foursquare layout, the very thing that gave the home its proportion and grace, had been dismantled.

Our clients came to us with a heartfelt intention:
They wanted this home restored to its former glory.

Not recreated exactly as it was, but thoughtfully reinterpreted — honoring its history while making it livable, functional, and beautiful for modern family life.

This project became a true restoration at its core: a celebration of original craftsmanship, a return to architectural integrity, and a design journey rooted in respect for the home’s past.

The Before

Before living room of Denver Foursquare with fireplace, gray walls, patterned rug, and opened layout lacking historic trim.

BEFORE

The once-classic Denver Foursquare layout had been opened and rearranged, losing its sense of structure and history.

Before staircase and living area showing removed walls, minimal millwork, and disrupted Denver Square floor plan.

BEFORE

Original trim and architectural details had been removed, leaving the home feeling incomplete and disconnected from its past.

Before kitchen with light gray cabinetry, granite countertops, and peninsula seating disconnected from original Foursquare proportions.

BEFORE

The primary areas lacked cohesion, warmth, and the timeless character the home once carried.

Before we began, the home presented several challenges typical of older properties altered without regard for their architectural lineage:

  • The traditional Denver Foursquare floor plan had been erased
  • Walls were removed without considering the home’s original proportions
  • Historic trim, casings, and details had been stripped away
  • Previous updates felt inconsistent and stylistically disjointed
  • The home needed thoughtful cohesion and restored identity

Our goal was clear:

Rebuild the home’s historic architecture, honor its early-century craftsmanship, and create a warm, modern-classic interior that feels truly whole again.

The After

A Reinstated Foursquare Layout — Balanced, Grounded & Historically True

Restored symmetry and flow — the heart of the Denver Foursquare returned.

One of the most transformative elements of the project was restoring the Foursquare’s original sense of order and balance. We thoughtfully reintroduced walls and spatial definitions where they had once existed, creating:

  • Clear, intentional room divisions
  • A main floor that feels grounded and architecturally sound
  • Sightlines that honor the home’s historic rhythm

This reinstated layout immediately brought back the calm, functional flow the home had been missing for decades.

New millwork crafted to match the original home’s era, bringing character back to every room.

With much of the original trim missing, we researched architectural patterns from the home’s build period and recreated trim profiles that matched the style, width, and craftsmanship of the era.

We restored:

  • Door and window casings
  • Baseboards
  • Crown and picture rail profiles (if applicable)
  • Stair and railing details
  • Interior architraves and transitional trim

The result is a home wrapped once again in the rich, intentional detailing it deserved.

With the home’s Denver Square architecture restored, the interiors were reimagined to honor its late 1800s roots while infusing it with Victorian charm and a playful, English-inspired sensibility. Rather than leaning minimalist, this home embraces a layered, character-forward approach: rich patterns, saturated hues, traditional millwork, and a curated mix of textures that feel warm, collected, and deeply personal.

The restored trimwork becomes a grounding element throughout the home — framing wallpapered rooms, anchoring bold color moments, and giving each space a sense of permanence. Decorative lighting, vintage-inspired fixtures, and thoughtfully selected furnishings bring a sense of whimsy and Old World charm without feeling precious or overdone.

The living spaces now feel:

  • Cozy yet elegant — intimate rooms wrapped in pattern and color that invite you to settle in.
  • Historic yet imaginative — Victorian details paired with playful English cottage influences.
  • Layered, storied, and full of personality — a home that feels collected over time, not designed all at once.

Everything works in harmony because the design is rooted in the home’s original Denver Square architecture — lovingly restored and then re-envisioned through a lens of charm, character, and richly textured English-inspired style.

The kitchen had been one of the most dramatically altered spaces, so we reconfigured it to align with the reinstated floor plan and to improve functionality.

Key upgrades include:

  • A layout that complements the restored room divisions
  • Warm wood cabinetry with understated, period-inspired detailing
  • Soft stone surfaces with timeless appeal
  • Updated lighting thoughtfully layered for work and ambiance
  • Subtle design choices that nod to the home’s history

It now feels like it belongs — both to the home’s past and its present.

The primary suite transformation balances modern comfort with classic proportion. We softened the palette, added warm materials, and designed a bathroom that feels spa-like while respecting the home’s historic context through:

  • Subtle vintage-inspired shapes
  • Natural stone and quiet textures
  • Soft metal finishes
  • Simplified lines that allow the restored trim to shine

This space now offers the relaxation and beauty a historic home can uniquely provide.

What makes this project special is not just the transformation — it’s the restoration of identity. The Julian Street home now feels like itself again. Its architecture is coherent. Its materials are authentic. Its spirit is intact.

And yet, it’s also undeniably suited for modern living.

This is the heart of historical renovation:
